They are usually called as ''Achari'' , ''Mestha'' or ''Charodi'' in Some North part of Karnataka (Karwar, Honnavar, Sirsi and Sagar) and ''Nayak'' or ''Mestha'' in Southern part of Karnataka (Shiroor, Kundapura, Mangalore). They as per their tales, they have migrated from Goa via sea-route to coastal Karnataka.〔〔 They are included in other backward class communities of Karnataka in post-independent India.〔("Central list of OBCs for the state of Karnataka" )〕 They are generally followers of Sringeri Matha.〔 They are also worshipers of Shiva, which is locally also known as Ravalnath.
According to one version, the word ''Charodi'' means 'Four (char) boats(hodi) in Konkani, to explain that their ancestors had fled from Goa in four boats.
